All In: The June Edition with Tuck Admissions Director Amy Mitson

By Amy Mitson

Each month, Amy Mitson, co-executive director of Tuck Admissions, will be here on the Tuck360 Blog to share the latest news, insights, and advice from Admissions. We look forward to getting to know you and sharing what makes the Tuck MBA experience distinct. As Teo Gonzalez T’21 puts it: “Tuck is a place where everyone can be 'all in.' When you commit to this experience, you commit to two years when all your focus is on yourself, your teammates, and your craft.

Change is in the air here in Hanover. Spring and summer are doing their usual dance, with some days feeling like August and others more like March. Everything is in full bloom and, on any given day, you can catch members of the Dartmouth community and beyond gathering on the Dartmouth Green to soak up the sun, study, and play a game of frisbee or soccer. Our T’21s have handed in their final exams and are enjoying graduation season and their final days in the Upper Valley. A Tuck “Winter” Carnival proved to be a great success, safely bringing together both classes for a day of fun in the sun—all to the tune of The Tuck Band.

Here at Tuck, we have arrived at a time on the calendar and in the academic year when things are both winding down and gearing up with the same intensity. As I see one chapter come to a close, another one is just beginning. Although I always go into the summer with mixed emotions about seeing another graduating class head out to better the world through business, I know that our current and incoming classes will pick up the baton and move the Tuck mission forward with the same vigorous spirit.

For those of you who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting at an online event over the past year, I hope you are enjoying your exploration of Tuck and the distinct MBA experience we are proud to offer. For those of you who are early in your MBA search, connecting with the Admissions team or Tuck student ambassadors are wonderful ways to learn more about the Tuck MBA and to get to know those who are currently living the experience.

The Tuck Band performs at a special spring edition of Tuck "Winter" Carnival which brought both classes together.

I want to hold on to the transitional theme of this blog a little longer because as I meet all of you at our events, I am starting to see a shift in the questions being asked.

To our waitlisted applicants who are looking for more insight and detail into how future admissions offers will unfold: I welcome you to keep in touch. Let us know of any updates to your circumstances and why Tuck is still your first choice. While we don’t yet know what the summer will look like, offers of admission are historically made on a rolling basis and may come at any time between now and the start of Tuck Launch in August. In late spring or summer, we may further reduce the size of the waitlist and release candidates if it does not appear that we will be able to extend additional offers of admission.

I'm also receiving many questions about when the application will be available, and what the interview and visit policy will look like for the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. Our goal is to have the new application live at end of June. While campus is opening up for the coming academic year, and we anticipate being able to welcome visitors, applicant interviews through at least Round 1 will continue to be conducted virtually.  The reason for this is equity. While the public health conditions have significantly improved in the U.S., that is not the case in much of the world and we want to be mindful that our interview policy not create a situation where U.S. applicants can interview on-campus but international applicants cannot because of pandemic-related travel limitations. We want all applicants to have an equal opportunity to share their story with us without health or travel concerns, and we have found over the past year that virtual interviews still provide great insight into candidates. We also plan to continue guaranteed interviews for Round 1 and 2 applicants who submit their applications early. Details will be coming very soon as will guidance about admissions visitors to campus. Thank you for your patience as we make final updates to the application and deadlines!

And finally, to the T21s who are completing their MBAs in a moment none of us could have foreseen when we welcomed you to Hanover in August of 2019, our team sends heartfelt congratulations and best of luck to all. We are delighted that both the Tuck Investiture and Dartmouth Commencement ceremonies are in person and that graduates will be able to celebrate with family present! From all of us in Tuck Admissions, we hope this precious time between the end of classes and graduation is peaceful, relaxing, and fun. We look forward to sharing your stories with curious and engaged prospective applicants!

Until next month!

Amy
