Course Description

Argentina is one of the most physically beautiful, culturally interesting, and economically well-endowed countries in the world. It is also a nation that has struggled to live up to its economic potential. In 1914, Argentina of was one of the ten richest countries in the world; after a century plagued by military dictatorship, hyperinflation, and numerous debt defaults, Argentina’s GDP per capita is now on par with Costa Rica and Guyana. Yet the country is beginning a radical new chapter. Javier Milei, a free-market enthusiast, was elected president in 2023. President Milei has vowed to “break the shackles of the oppressive state” by doing everything from dollarizing the economy to easing the process for divorce. Students on the Argentina GIX will spend time with senior business and government leaders as we witness an extraordinary economic experiment (and the inevitable backlash) while imbibing one of the world’s most winsome cultures. Is Argentina on the right track? If so, what new business opportunities will it present, and what are the policy lessons for other countries?
